The 2020 Emmys Have Been Weird—The Social Media Reactions Have Been Hilarious

Early on at this year's bizarre 2020 Emmys ceremony, it seemed that the three-ish hour telecast might just be a series of Schitt's Creek mini speeches, occasionally interrupted by Jimmy Kimmel-fronted bits that go on a little too long. In his defense, this year's strange ceremony is one big televised experiment that he's conducting with no live audience. Yeah, that audience in the beginning? Spliced in.

Over a hundred celebrities are on standby for this year's awards, which are being done virtually. The trophies are on site with the nominees, and if they win, then they do their whole acceptance speech from afar. Is that the most natural thing in the world? No. But that's 2020, my friends. The pandemic keeps us at home, but it doesn't mean the show stops. Neither do the corny jokes or the sometimes bloated bits about setting an envelope on fire to kill all the germs.

Of course, with all of us at home, social media is full of opinions on how the show is going, which jokes landed, and whether the winners are deserved. So far, it's a big night for late blooming comedy series and Jason Bateman love. Here's the best social media reactions of the night.

The big sweep for Schitt's Creek at the start of the night had people in their feelings about the think-I-can series that ended its critically lauded run this year. The first five awards of the night went to Catherine O'Hara, Dan Levy, and Eugene Levy for acting along with a writing and directing award for the series. And people clocked how much the cast seems to love one another.

In the limited series and TV movie categories, Watchmen took a predictably commanding lead, locking in awards for Regina King, Damon Lindelof, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The winners took time in their speeches to highlight the social injustices that plague the complicated times we are living through, be it King's shirt featuring a portrait of Breonna Taylor or Mark Ruffalo's call for equality and justice.

Succession took home the night's big win for Best Drama Series, along with other major awards in the drama field. That wasn't a total lock though. In particular, Zendaya's massive win for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series wasn't just an upset; it was a record-shattering victory. At 24-years-old, Zendaya's win for Euphoria makes her the youngest actress to ever win the category.
