The Holocene Extinction, or the Sixth Extinction, has already cost the world thousands of beloved species due to human activity. Although this event has been ongoing for the past 10,000 years or so—since the last Ice Age, to be exact—the mass extinction has been accelerating at a dizzying pace. In the 20th century, for example, we lost about 543 land vertebrate species, according to a June 2020 study published in the journal PNAS, but we're set to lose the same amount of species over the next 20 years, alone.
