Two students were injured when their school bus crashed into a New Jersey home Wednesday morning, and police said that a brake failure was the cause, per multiple news outlets.

According to Edison Police Chief Tom Bryan, who spoke out a press conference released by News12 New Jersey, police received a 911 call around 8:06 a.m. local time about a bus carrying about 30 middle school students. The vehicle was traveling along Rahway Road in Edison before it went through a house, per News12 New Jersey.

“It is reported the driver tried to stop and could not stop at the intersection of Ziger on Rahway Road,” he said. “It was also reported to me that she did a great job of actually saving the children on board."

“She avoided hitting three other houses and ended up careening through the garage of another house...taking a couple of fences down before that," Bryan further noted.

The Edison police chief said that two students sustained minor injuries and that the driver was injured, adding that it was reported the brakes on the bus failed. He added that the New Jersey Department of Transportation and New Jersey Motor Vehicles Commission will inspect the vehicle.

“It’s amazing that no one else was seriously injured,” he said.

The homeowners of the house were not present when the incident occurred, per News12 New Jersey. Cleaning crews were inside the residence but were okay.

The passengers on the bus attended John Adams Middle School, WABC-TV reported.

"There were a few students with minor injuries,” said Edison Township Public Schools Superintendent Edward Aldarelli, per WCBS-TV.  "Their parents are currently with them right now, and we are getting updates on that. There are counseling services for the students who've been transported back to school. Our building principal, as well as our teachers and counselors, are providing them with support."

Aldarelli also said, per News 12 New Jersey, that a majority of the students from the bus continued on with their school day. “They’re obviously traumatized right now,” he said so we want to make sure that their well-being is first and foremost on our minds.”

Rachel Endress, an Edison resident, told WCBS: "I think it's just something I've never seen before and hope not to witness again.”
