Two bodies have been found in the Scottish Highlands amid the search for a missing father and son from Cheshire, U.K.

Tom Parry, 49, and his son Richie, 12, were expected to return home on Wednesday, May 29, after their hiking trip to Glen Nevis and Glen Coe, outlets including The Guardian, the BBC, and STV News reported.

Police Scotland has since confirmed in a statement that two bodies were found on the evening of May 29, but noted that formal identification is yet to take place.

Police also stated that the missing father and son's family had been "made aware" of the update amid the search.

"Enquiries are ongoing but there are no apparent suspicious circumstances," their statement added. "A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course."

Inspector Craig Johnstone said, “Our thoughts are with all those involved. I would like to thank all emergency services and Mountain Rescue volunteers.”

According to the BBC, the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team said Parry and his son were experienced hillwalkers.

Police Scotland said it didn't have any further information to add when contacted by PEOPLE, and Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team didn't immediately respond when PEOPLE requested for comment.

Parry and his son Richie are from Alsager, Cheshire, and had headed to the Scottish Highlands on Tuesday, May 28. Their car was found in the Three Sisters car park in Glencoe, per The Guardian.

The pair's disappearance came amid thundery downpours in the Glencoe area, the outlet stated. The stunning views attract thousands of tourists every year.

Per a Facebook post shared by AFC Alsager, Richie recently joined one of their newly formed under-13s soccer teams. Parry is believed to work as a market researcher, the BBC reported.

St. Mary Magdalene's Church, in the pair's hometown of Alsager, shared a statement on Facebook after it was reported two bodies had been found.

"St. Mary's Church will continue to be open, as it is everyday, for anyone who wishes to come in and peacefully hold Tom, Richie and all their family, in their thoughts and prayers," their message said.
