This 1970s Michigan Home Looks Like It Belongs in West Palm Beach

“When we drove up, we said, 'This house is weird. It must be for us,'” recalls interior designer Veronica Hamlet. The 5,000-square-foot residence was like nothing she had seen before. Built in 1974, it had a hard-to-nail style: a mixture of Italian architecture with mid-century lines, all rendered in stucco. Something you might find in West Palm Beach. But this was the west side of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

“It’s strangely like the Holiday Inn,” Veronica admits. There's an indoor pool, so she and her husband, Jeremiah, a former professional basketball player, can watch their kids swim while they eat breakfast if they so please. The first and second floors form a horseshoe, providing a view of the pool from nearly every room in the house. For some, if might have been too much—but the family loves it. “We are adventurous, out-of-the-box people,” Veronica says. “Everyone who knows us says it.”

After starting her career with Homepolish, the interior designer moved off on her own. “I was blessed to have some great clients there who helped set the tone for expanding on my own,” she says. She then launched a textile brand, Semikah Textiles, in 2015, selling Moroccan rugs sourced throughout the country. She focuses on vintage, one-of-a-kind rugs that are more than 50 years old, made by the Beni Ourain, Beni Mguild, and Boujad tribes.

“There are 17 main tribes and hundreds of sub-tribes, and we focus on the more high-end pieces with proven value,” she explains. “As an American, it’s actually inappropriate to go directly to the source, but we have gotten as close as we can and developed good connections with people all over Morocco.” Traveling two to three times a year to Morocco alongside her friend and photographer Carley Page Summers, Veronica continues to be inspired by the artisans.

Design is clearly always on her mind and it shows in her family home. “My taste is very global,” she says. The living room is layered with a Chinese Art Deco Rug. The curved fireplace, which was inspired by Australian design firm Decus Interiors, has become the focal point of the space, alongside two rust-colored chairs from CB2.

There’s the dramatic powder bath with forest green walls and a vintage Murano blow glass light fixture, the romantic and heavily European-inspired master bedroom and her daughter’s room, which is an all-pink wonder with ultra-feminine wallpaper, plus the cozy breakfast nook with a rattan sofa she picked up in Bali.

“Whenever I want to buy something new, I always shop my house first,” she says. “You never know what you can accomplish in a space just by moving things around.”
