Even in a world where more beauty brands champion a social cause — whether it's donating proceeds to Planned Parenthood or becoming as eco-friendly as possible — than don't, it's still not always easy to figure out if a brand you love is really doing what it says it's doing. From vaguely-worded promises to donate undefined portions of sales to the entirely-too-complex recycling systems that vary from state to state, reading the fine print is essential.
That's also the case when you're trying to figure out if a makeup brand is really, truly, completelycruelty-free. There are multiple labeling systems, along with a bevy of carefully-worded brand statements against animal testing that actually allow for the practice in some instances. So, even for those looking to support these brands, they’re not always easy to find.
To help navigate the waters, we've rounded up some of our favorite cruelty-free beauty brands for you. Ahead, find brands (some independently owned, some owned by a parent company) that don't engage in animal testing with either raw or finished materials and products. They also don't contract other parties to test on animals on their behalf, or sell any products in countries where animal testing is required. Some are drugstore brands, others luxe — but they’re all offering the kind of pigment payoff that’s certifiably lust-worthy, no matter where you stand on the issue.
At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

Around 40 people with mobility problems and some farm animals on the Spanish island of La Palma were evacuated to safer areas on Sunday after scientists warned of the rising risk of a volcanic eruption. Scientists recorded a series of earthquakes reaching 3.8 magnitude in the Cumbre Vieja national park in the south of the island, according to the Spanish National Geographical Institute. The vulnerable people and farm animals were evacuated from Las Manchas, Fuencaliente, La Bombilla, El Remo and Puerto Naos, the Canary Islands government said, but the island remains on yellow alert, the second lowest of a four-level alert system.
Taiwan's foreign minister said Sunday that a new tropical fruit import ban by China was a “hostile move”, amid souring relations between the two states. Chinese customs authorities announced earlier Saturday that they would stop the import of custard and wax apples from Taiwan, citing pest concerns. “Following a series of military threats, the #PRC is weaponizing trade by announcing an immediate ban on #Taiwan’s custard & wax apples,” Taiwanese foreign minister Joseph Wu said on Twitter, referring to the mainland People's Republic of China by its common acronym.
Thousands of people including soldiers and diplomats marched peacefully through the Ukrainian capital on Sunday in an annual gay pride parade despite some opposition to an event called off last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Organisers said about 7,000 attended the Equality March this year, compared to 8,000 in 2019, which saw the biggest turnout since the event was initiated a decade ago despite opposition from religious and nationalist groups. Homophobia is widespread in Ukraine, according to a survey by the sociological group "Rating" published in August, which said 47% of respondents had a negative view of the LGBTQ+ community.
President Emmanuel Macron will speak in the coming days with President Joe Biden in what will be their first contact since a major diplomatic crisis erupted between France and the United States over a submarine deal with Australia, an official said Sunday. The phone call is at the request of Biden, government spokesman Gabriel Attal said, adding that there was “shock” and “anger” at first. What the French now call a “grave crisis” erupted over the sudden, surprise end to a 2016 contract worth at least $66 billion between France and Australia to build 12 conventional diesel-electric submarines.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel's chief of staff called on political parties to agree quickly on who should succeed her after next Sunday's election and avoid the kind of protracted coalition talks that followed the last vote four years ago. The likelihood of long coalition talks after the vote means Merkel will not be leaving office any time soon. "My wish is for a swift government formation," Helge Braun told Reuters, adding that even though the current government would continue to govern during looming coalition talks there were certain limitations over the scope of leadership.
