12-Year-Old Allegedly Leads New Mexico Authorities on Chase in Stolen Car

A 12-year-old boy is facing charges after allegedly stealing an SUV and leading police officers on a car chase in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on September 12, according to the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities attempted to stop the vehicle “to no avail” after receiving reports of a reckless driver, the police department told Storyful. After the SUV slowed down in a parking lot, three male passengers, whom police later determined to be juveniles, jumped out of the moving vehicle while the driver continued on.

The suspect drove out of the parking lot and into oncoming traffic, then hit a vehicle head-on. The driver of the other car was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the department said.

After detaining the suspect, officers discovered he was 12 years old with an outstanding warrant for conspiracy to commit a burglary of a vehicle. In a statement shared with Storyful, the sheriff’s department said the youngster had been charged with aggravated fleeing of a law enforcement officer and receiving or transferring a stolen motor vehicle.

This video was captured by TJ Burks, who was driving on Highway 70 when the SUV swerved into her lane and almost hit her car. When Burks moved into the middle lane to catch a glimpse and film the driver, she was caught “completely off-guard” after noticing it was a young kid in the driver’s seat.

“He could barely see over the steering wheel,” Burks told Storyful. “I can’t believe he is doing stuff like this so young!” she added. Credit: TJ Burks via Storyful
