The history of the humble British classic the 'sausage roll' yes I said British so any Americans who think that just because you wrapped a Frank in pastry instead of a roll and called it 'puff dog' doesn't mean it hadn't already existed since the early 19th century in England. Now we could go further back to Roman times and even ancient Greece to find references to meat wrapped in dough but that would be vastly different to what we Brits call a sausage roll. The French also have a claim to around the same time period and maybe we stole it from them but that doesn't matter, it's the fact that we proud Brits have taken this humble snack to our hearts, just like fish and chips where some historian will try to convince you that it comes from somewhere else, well just about everything comes from somewhere else in one form or another, so the sausage roll is ours and that's the end of it OK! There is a well known national baker in the UK called Greggs who produce Billions (probably) of these things every year and it makes up much of their profits, the term "Gregg's dummy' refers to a baby or toddler or even small child being pacified with a sausage roll while mum gets on with her day. Unfortunately the Gregg's sausage roll is horrible, all pale and floppy with grease oozing out of it onto your lovely clean clothes, so if you've had one of these atrocities, then you really haven't got the right idea of what a proper sausage roll is. So I do hope that you give making your own one day, you don't have to make your own ruff puff pastry as some shop bought pre-rolled will work just fine. You can be adventurous and make your own sausage meat or just buy your favourite brand and use those. You can spice them up with any thing you like such as chorizo which I used in this video, harissa paste, curry whatever you like. You can use a vegetarian sausage alternative, the list goes on.

AMMAN (Reuters) -A former Jordanian royal court chief and a low-ranking member of the royal family pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges of agitating to destabilise the monarchy, one of their lawyers said. Prosecutors had referred to a military court the case of Bassem Awadallah, an ex-royal court chief and finance minister who played a big role in the drive to liberalise Jordan's economy, and Sherif Hassan Zaid, a distant relative of King Abdullah. During the first session of the trial on Monday, both pleaded not guilty, according to Mohamed Afif, Awadallah's lawyer.

Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad has been pushing a campaign called “the year of wheat”.But instead he’s facing a year of drought. A lack of rainfall risks leaving an import gap of at least 1.5 million tons – that Syria’s Minister of Agriculture has put down to climate change. The harvest has dropped this year by around 50 percent - says Farmer Imad al Sayyed. The agricultural blow and lack of funds to finance the imports will add pressure to Syria’s already battered economy. Russia, one of the world's largest exporters of wheat and one of Assad's closest allies, says it’s stepping in to help the country meet the four million tonnes of annual domestic demand. But its cargoes have been slow to arrive in recent years as funds grew scarce, with publicly available customs data showing no significant supplies to Syria. Officials and expert estimates show at least 1.5 million tons of wheat imports were needed. They said a 1.2 million-ton government purchasing target, driven by forced sales to the government, now looked wildly unrealistic. The country's bread basket lies in the northeast Hasaka province where much of the country's cereals crop is in the hands of breakaway Kurds.Damascus is unlikely to get any supplies from farmers under the Kurdish-led administration there, where over 60 percent of the country's wheat is grown.About 70 percent of wheat production still lies outside of government control, forcing it to compete with other bidders by pushing prices up.Meanwhile Syrians are going hungry.Much of the domestic wheat demand is needed to support a government bread subsidy program. The country’s financial troubles have already translated into bread shortages with some residents waiting in lines of up to five hours across government-controlled areas. The World Food Programme said in March a record 12.4 million Syrians suffer from food insecurity and hunger. That’s more than 60 percent of the population and double the number seen in 2018.
