10 Ways Taylor Swift Teased “The Tortured Poets Department ”with Her Outfits
The singer has been giving subtle clues about her new album — 'Tortured Poets Department' — with her recent outfits
Taylor Swift loves dropping style Easter eggs about her new music, and The Tortured Poets Department was no different.
Leading up to the release of her 11th studio album, the "Down Bad" singer dropped subtle clues about the album's moody theme and poetic aesthetic with her wardrobe.
While her Midnights era was defined by moon-themed apparel and astrology accessories, The Tortured Poets Department has been characterized by dark academia outfits, including lots of blazers, tailored suits and muted hues.
She gave the biggest Easter egg about the album when she attended the 2024 Grammys in a black-and-white look that paralleled the album's sepia tone-colored cover and a necklace that paid tribute to actress Clara Bow (whom she penned a song after on the album).
Read ahead for all the ways she teased The Tortured Poets Department with her outfits.
Taylor Swift's Preppy Outfit
Throughout the summer of 2023, Swift was frequently seen stepping in and out of the studio in New York City (possibly recording The Tortured Poets Department?) and her outfits leaned into preppy, schoolgirl-style.
On one outing in June, Swift paired lace-up oxfords, crew-length socks and a pleated blue skirt with an oversized light blue and white striped blouse, which appeared to be from The Row, the same brand Swift dons in her The Tortured Poets Department album cover.
Taylor Swift's Khaki Pants
Swift looked like she was ready to hit the Tortured Poets Department board room as she dined with Sophie Turner and Haim in N.Y.C. in September 2023. Keeping with the sepia tone of the album cover, she paired the look with some subtle gold jewelry and, of course, her signature red lip.
Taylor Swift's Rugby Shirt
Swift looked like Serena van der Woodsen as she roamed the streets of N.Y.C. in this Stella McCartney rugby shirt worn as a mini dress in October 2023. The outfit screamed schoolgirl chic as she paired it with brown knee-high Prada boots, perfectly fitting with the poetry theme of the album.
Taylor Swift's Dark Blazer
As Swift stepped out for dinner with her Eras Tour opener Gracie Abrams in November 2023, she paired a low-key white dress with a dark wool blazer and brown patent leather heels that gave off Chairman of the Tortured Poets Department vibes.
Taylor Swift's Pleated Skirt
Swift kept the black and brown color scheme going as she had a girls' night out with Selena Gomez, Sophie Turner, Brittany Mahomes, and more. For the fun outing, she paired a pleated mini skirt with thigh-high leather boots, giving off a subtly sexy look.
Taylor Swift's Cozy Sweater
Swift braced the chilly New York City air by donning a cozy sweater, a staple for a dark academia outfit. She paired the androgynous look with brown trousers with brown leather shoes.
Taylor Swift's Matching Tweed Set
As Swift grabbed dinner in New York City, she donned a matching tweed set by Stella McCartney. The outfit kept with the album's moody tone as she paired the brown colors with black Sheertex tights and a pair of Jimmy Choo/Jean Paul Gaultier pumps with acrylic wedge heels featuring the Eiffel tower.
Taylor Swift's All-Black Ensemble
After ringing in her birthday with friends in New York City, Swift kept the preppy theme by donning an all-black ensemble as she hit the studio for a late-night recording session. Once again, she could be seen wearing black tights and a pair of heeled black loafers, similar to the dark academia aesthetic.
Taylor Swift's Black Dress
Though many Swifties initially believed Swift was hinting at Reputation (Taylor's Version) with her all-black ensembles, this outfit easily could have been teasing The Tortured Poets Department. During a girls' night out with Mahomes, she donned a LBD along with a gold chain belt, leather boots, and a Louis Vuitton bag.
Taylor Swift's Grammys Outfit
Of course, Swift's biggest style Easter egg about the album came at the Grammys in February 2024, where she officially announced the album. Going with the black-and-white theme of the album, Swift donned a draping white gown with stylish opera gloves. She even gave a nod to Clara Bow (the namesake behind one of her songs) as she wore a clock choker necklace set to 12 o'clock.
