10 Stars Who Had Their First Kisses on Screens
If you think your first kiss was awkward, imagine if it was caught on camera!
First kisses can be awkward, but nothing beats the pressure of a rookie smooch on set!
Stars like Kristen Stewart, Millie Bobby Brown, Selena Gomez and Josh Hutcherson experienced their first liplocks while cameras were rolling, and they'll never forget it. While some kisses went over well, others remain an embarrassingly unforgettable memory from child stardom.
Find out what was going on in these stars' minds as their milestone moments were filmed for screens.
Kristen Stewart — with Jamie Bell
During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Kristen Stewart told Andy Cohen about her very first kiss, which happened with cameras rolling. The Spencer actress revealed that she pecked her one-time costar Jamie Bell nearly 20 years earlier, on set of their 2004 flick Undertow.
In response to Cohen's surprise at the circumstances, Stewart clarified, "It’s not like we were literally making out. It was a bit of a peck, but I was 13 or 14."
Still, the actress was spooked: “I was so nervous, I was freaking out,” she continued.
Selena Gomez — with Dylan Sprouse
The world watched Selena Gomez's first kiss when she guest-starred on an episode of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, starring Dylan and Cole Sprouse. The young star locked lips with Dylan during her appearance in 2006, but several years later, she revealed she actually wanted to kiss his brother instead!
The "Single Soon" singer recounted her bittersweet first on The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2020 and opened up about her crush on Cole. At the time, Gomez recalled, she was "obsessed" with The Suite Life and thought she and Cole "were going to be together."
But much to a young Gomez's chagrin, her character was paired with Dylan instead. "It was my first kiss — [and] on-camera! It was one of the worst days of my life!“ she told Clarkson.
Josh Hutcherson — with Charlie Ray
Josh Hutcherson stole hearts in Little Manhattan as a pre-teen falling in love for the first time. And in real life, the young actor was experiencing his very own first — a kiss! The Hunger Games alumnus spoke to Seventeen about the milestone moment that occurred between him and his costar, Charlie Ray, while they shot the 2005 rom-com.
"I was 11 years old. I was filming in New York City and my mom surprised me by flying my dad in for the kiss scene for support," he told the outlet. "But it was a horrible first kiss because I had like a crew of like 50 people standing around and watching me. It was the most non-real, non-intimate moment that I could possibly have my first kiss, I think."
Millie Bobby Brown — with Finn Wolfhard
Millie Bobby Brown had her first kiss in character while filming the season 1 finale of Stranger Things. Her character, Eleven, kisses her best friend Mike Wheeler, played by Finn Wolfhard.
While Brown freely told Variety she'd never been kissed before, the actress playfully questioned her costar's kissing experience.
“He says I wasn’t [his first kiss], but I definitely think I was,” Brown said in 2017. “I think he was just trying to be cool.”
Keke Palmer — with Corbin Bleu
In a 2013 interview with Access Hollywood Live, the Nope star revealed that she shared her first kiss with Jump In! costar Corbin Bleu. Looking back, Palmer remembers her 12-year-old self having doubts about the romantic moment on set of their 2007 Disney Channel Original Movie.
“I was very, very nervous. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is the first person I am kissing outside of my family.' It was real scary for me,” she said, adding that they did about 20 takes of the scene. "I became really self-conscious, I was like ‘Should I being having my first kiss on a movie? Should I let that happen to me? Maybe this is all a bad thing?' "
Kirsten Dunst — with Brad Pitt
Kirsten Dunst's first kiss came with quite an age gap! At just 11 years old, the actress shared a smooch with her Interview with the Vampire costar Brad Pitt, who was 30 at the time. When the young actress was promoting their movie in 1994, she called the moment "gross," and her feelings haven't changed over the years.
In 2019, Entertainment Tonight showed Dunst the throwback video of her calling out the icky moment, and the all-grown-up star echoed her tween self's sentiments.
“Yeah, it was gross! I stand by that. It would have been so much creepier if an 11-year-old was like, ‘It was great.’ You’d be like, ‘There’s something wrong with this child,' ” she said.
Dakota Fanning — with Thomas Curtis
Speaking with W Magazine in 2017, Dakota Fanning recalled one of her earliest big-screen stints playing a young Reese Witherspoon in 2002's Sweet Home Alabama. During her brief appearance in the film, Fanning kisses fellow child star Thomas Curtis, who played a younger version of Josh Lucas' character.
"That was my first kiss. I was 7 years old. He was 10. It was very nerve-wracking," Fanning said. She went on to recount how — according to her longtime studio teacher — Fanning would turn away after every take and wipe off her costar's kiss, because she was "trying to be kind" but "wasn't really into [the kiss]."
Candace Cameron Bure — with Scott Curtis
In 2012, Candace Cameron Bure dished to Glamour about having her first kiss in character as D.J. Tanner on an early '90s episode of Full House. During a scripted game of Spin the Bottle at her birthday party, D.J. locks lips with Kevin Gwin, who was played by Scott Curtis.
Melissa Gilbert — with Dean Butler
In August 2023, Melissa Gilbert appeared on an episode of Wilder to discuss playing Laura Ingalls Wilder in the TV adaption of her semi-autobiographical Little House on the Prairie book series. And looking back, Gilbert questioned the eight-year age gap between her and Dean Butler, who played her on-screen husband, Almanzo Wilder.
At the time of their first on-screen kiss — which was also Gilbert's first real-life kiss — she was a young teenager, and he was in his 20s.
"I was 14, 15 years old, knock-kneed, bucktoothed, still had braces on ... I hadn't been on a date, I hadn't kissed a boy," Gilbert recalled on the podcast. "By the time we got to the 'Sweet 16' episode and the first kiss and all of that — you know, I knew Dean and I liked Dean and I got along with Dean, but I still felt like I was out of my element, to put it mildly."
Mila Kunis — with Ashton Kutcher
Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher's romantic history dates way back, long before they got married in 2015 and started a family together. During their days costarring on That '70s Show, Kunis had her first kiss with Kutcher while in character and on set.
In 2001, the Bad Moms star told PEOPLE all about their scripted smooch, which was especially awkward since the two barely knew each other. Still, Kunis admitted she had a big crush on the model-turned-actor.
“I was like, ‘Oh, he’s so cute, it’s the Calvin Klein model!’ ” Kunis said. “Then I was like, ‘I have to kiss him?’ I was so nervous and uncomfortable. I had the biggest crush on him.”
But Kunis told PEOPLE that Kutcher soothed her nerves with kindness and humor. “He just made jokes and gave me funny little compliments. He made me laugh," she said.
