10-Year-Old Boy Dies After Being Crushed by Elevator, Police Say

Police in Australia have confirmed that the child trapped under an elevator at a school died at the scene

A 10-year-old boy died after being crushed under an elevator at a school in Australia Wednesday, police said.

In a statement on Wednesday by New South Wales Police, emergency services arrived at a school in Wahroonga after reports of a child trapped.

“Officers attached to Kuring-Gai Police Area Command arrived to find a ten-year-old boy trapped under a lift,” read the statement. “Fire and Rescue NSW attempted to remove the boy however he died at the scene.”

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the incident took place at St Lucy’s School for Students with Disabilities.

“St Lucy’s School is very sad to confirm the tragic death of one of our students,” the school shared in a Facebook post Wednesday. "We are cooperating with investigating police. "

“The school will be closed to students until further notice,” the school’s statement added. ”We ask for privacy and space for our students, families and staff to grie at this difficult time as we remember our beautiful student.”

New South Wales Police said in its statement that the authorities have established a crime scene and a recovery operation is ongoing. Police told PEOPLE on Friday that there have been no further updates.

A letter by St. Lucy’s School’s principal, David Raphael, that was sent to parents Friday identified the victim as Sanad Shahriar, per The Sydney Morning Herald.

“It is with sadness that I can inform you of the passing of Sanad Shahriar,” Raphael said. “We understand that this is distressing news. The school is in the process of preparing information for you to use with your child to help them understand the passing of Sanad.”

Sanad was remembered in a Facebook post by the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology alumni group, which reportedly included Sanad's father.

“With extremely heavy heart I am announcing the only son (10 years) of our Buetian brother Hasan shahriar (EEE’96) has passed away in an incident in the school this Wednesday,” read the post, adding, “Please pray for the sweet little Sanad and hasan shahriar and Dr Yasmin."
