One man is dead following a house fire in northwest Calgary.

At around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, the Calgary Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting a house fire in the community of Evanston. Fire crews found smoke and flames coming from the basement window upon arrival.

Firefighters attacked the flames from the outside and brought the fire under control quickly, according to a news release sent Friday morning.

Fire crews searched the basement after receiving notice of someone inside and found one man had died. No one else was inside at the time.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by the fire department and police.
