SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium - McLaren's Lewis Hamilton was stripped of victory in a thrilling Belgian Grand Prix after stewards decided he had gained an advantage by cutting a chicane during a last-gasp duel with Kimi Raikkonen. Hamilton was given a 25-second time penalty by race officials which saw him demoted to third and victory handed to second-placed Felipe Massa, allowing the Ferrari driver to cut Hamilton's lead in the championship to just two points.
England win leaves Capello questioning
BARCELONA - England's 2-0 win over Andorra in their opening World Cup qualifier on Saturday left coach Fabio Capello with more questions than answers before their next match against Croatia on Wednesday. Capello said after their opening match in Group Six he had not decided whether Joe Cole, who came on as a second half substitute and scored both goals, would start against Croatia, who beat England home and away in the Euro 2008 qualifiers.
Lucquin claims maiden European Tour title
CRANS-SUR-SIERRE, Switzerland - Frenchman Jean-Francois Lucquin claimed his maiden European Tour title on Sunday after beating teenager Rory McIlroy in a sudden-death playoff at the European Masters. Lucquin came from four strokes behind McIlroy at the start of the round to card a four-under 67 for a 271 four-round total.
Prescott stuns Khan with first round KO
LONDON - Lightweight Amir Khan was knocked out inside a minute by Colombian Breidis Prescott on Saturday, ending the 2004 Olympic silver medallist's unbeaten record in savage fashion. Prescott felled Khan with a ferocious left hook inside 30 seconds and, although the 21-year-old wobbled back to his feet, the unbeaten Prescott ended the fight with a flurry of punches with the clock showing 51 seconds.
Mexes takes blame for embarrassing France defeat
CLAIREFONTAINE, France - Defender Philippe Mexes said on Sunday he was to blame for France's humiliating 3-1 defeat by Austria in a World Cup qualifier. Mexes added that the players stood by embattled coach Raymond Domenech, who managed to keep his job after his side's group-stage exit from Euro 2008 but still faces an uncertain future.
Dyke criticises Premier League
LONDON - Former BBC director-general Greg Dyke said on Sunday the Premier League was turning into a farce because of the growing foreign influence in the game. Dyke, who headed the Independent Television bid which was outbid by Sky Television for the rights to the new Premier League in 1992, criticised the takeover of Manchester City last week by an Abu Dhabi-based company.
Derby winner New Approach back to winning ways
DUBLIN - Epsom Derby winner New Approach returned to winning ways with a hard-fought victory in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on Sunday. The 8-13 favourite, ridden by Kevin Manning for trainer Jim Bolger, took up the running with 200 metres to go in the 2-km Group One event and held off the late charge of 50-1 outsider Traffic Guard by half a length.
Powell wins Rieti 100 metres in 9.82 seconds
RIETI, Italy - Former world record holder Asafa Powell continued his good form on Sunday, winning the 100 metres at the Rieti Grand Prix with a time of 9.82 seconds. Powell beat his Jamaican sprint team mate Michael Frater, who clocked 9.98, as well as Ronald Pognon of France and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, who both ran 10.10.
Cole double leads England to victory
BARCELONA - Substitute Joe Cole scored twice to lead England to a very ordinary 2-0 victory over Andorra in their opening World Cup Group Six qualifying match at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday. Cole, who replaced Stewart Downing at the start of the second half, fired England ahead after 49 minutes following a Frank Lampard free kick.
Newcastle hit back at Keegan criticism
LONDON - Newcastle United hit back on Saturday at Kevin Keegan's criticism of the club following his shock resignation as manager this week. Keegan, who quit on Thursday less than eight months after returning for a second stint as manager, said he had left because he did not have control over the Premier League club's transfer policy.
