Barton receives 12-match ban

LONDON - Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has been banned for 12 games, six of them suspended, for attacking a team mate while at former club Manchester City. Barton received his punishment, which takes immediate effect, at a Football Association disciplinary hearing on Friday after admitting a charge of violent conduct against Ousmane Dabo. He was also fined 25,000 pounds.

Chelsea's Rajkovic banned a year for spitting

BERNE, Switzerland - Serbia and Chelsea defender Slobodan Rajkovic has been given a one-year ban from all competitions after spitting at a referee during last month's Olympic Games. World football's governing body FIFA announced the sanction on Friday, following a meeting of its disciplinary committee on Monday.

Ferguson sceptical over club ownership rules

NYON, Switzerland - Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson expressed doubt on Friday over the practicality of imposing regulations on club ownership. Disgraced U.S. track star Jones leaves Texas prison

HOUSTON - Former U.S. sprinter Marion Jones left a federal prison in Texas on Friday after serving a six-month sentence for lying to prosecutors about steroid use that helped her win five medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Jones, 32, left the minimum security facility in San Antonio, Texas, at 8 a.m. CDT , a prison spokeswoman said.

Keegan resigns as Newcastle manager
