Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) was formed on 11th March 1994. Before the formation of PBRS, a few former leaders of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) like YB Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Kurup, YB Datuk Clarence Bongkos Malakun, Datuk James A. Vitales and YB Senator Limun Laikim had four meetings to discuss the formation of PBRS.

On 16th March 1994, YB Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Kurup together with YB Datuk Clarence Bongkos and YB Senator Limun Laikim met with Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohammad, who is the Barisan National Chairman in Kuala Lumpur to hand in application letter to join Barisan National as a component party. On 10th June 1994, PBRS was officially accepted as one of the component parties in Barisan National. Currently, PBRS President, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Kurup is a Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports.
