KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 (Bernama) -- Agencies under the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry including the Welfare Department (JKM) have been instructed to be on standby to help flood victims, said its minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
"Presently, JKM is providing basic necessities to be distributed to people affected by the latest floods," she told reporters after launching the national-level World Children's Day celebration at the Children's Activity Centre in Taman Putra Perdana, Puchong here today.
Since floods hit Kelantan and Terengganu yesterday, some 3,500 people had to be evacuated to relief centres.
One person has been reported missing in Pasir Mas, Kelantan because of the floods.
In PUTRAJAYA, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said his ministry had mobilised its youth volunteers to provide relief assistance in flood-stricken states.
The volunteers numbering some 5,000 youths would work together with government agencies and non-governmental organisations in providing assistance to flood victims, he said in a statement here.
