RED-LEVEL WEATHER WARNING FOR KELANTAN, TERENGGANU

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- The Meteorological Services Department has issued a red-level weather warning for several areas in Kelantan and Terengganu, starting today till Saturday.

The red-level weather warning refers to heavy widespread monsoon rain which is currently occurring or expected to occur in the next few hours.

This condition may cause floods in low-lying areas near the river banks, the department said in a statement here today.

The areas involved in Kelantan are Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Baharu, Bachok, Pasir Putih, Machang, Tanah Merah, Jeli and Kuala Krai, while in Terengganu, the areas involved are Besut, Setiu, Kuala Terengganu, Hulu Terengganu, Marang and Dungun.

Meanwhile, strong winds with speeds of up to 60 kmph and rough seas with waves as high as 4.5 metres over the coastal waters of Samui (Kelantan and Terengganu), Tioman (Pahang and East Johor), Condore and Bunguran were expected to persist until Saturday, it said.

Strong northeasterly winds of 40-50 kmph with waves of 3.5 metres in height over the waters off Sarawak, Reef North, Layang-Layang, Palawan, Labuan and Sabah (West Coast and Kudat) were also expected until Thursday, it added.

This condition of strong winds and rough seas was dangerous to small craft, recreational sea activities and sea sports, the department said.
